Help My Unbelief

April 21, 2020 By Donnella Cranford

FOCUS SCRIPTURE: Mark 9:23-24…Jesus said to him, “if you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.” Immediately the father of the child cried out and said with tears, “Lord I believe; help my unbelief!”

ENCOURAGEMENT: I’d like to lift the very short prayer spoken by the dad in vs 24, “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief”. In the message Bible it says, “Then I believe. Help me with my doubt”.

Here we have a dad who brings his son to Jesus asking Him to have compassion on his child.

The dominate theme in this passage is faith and doubt.

Have you ever found yourself in a place where your faith is met head on with doubt? More than likely, you can identify with this father. I’d venture to say, we’ve all found ourselves in a space where doubt hits our faith with a blow.

Unbelief can result from a lack of knowledge, fear and/or not fully receiving the love of our heavenly Father.

When you don’t have enough faith in any given moment, I encourage you to pray this simple, but powerful prayer, Lord, I believe, but help my unbelief. It is the acknowledgement of our inadequacy that allows God to work in our lives.

We can ask God for whatever we need. When we doubt, we can ask for more faith. When we are wavering in our tenacity to follow, we can ask for more tenacity. When we are unwilling to obey, we can ask to be made willing to obey. When we don’t have clarity; we can ask God for insight and wisdom. God honors us when we believe, and is waiting for us to ask Him to help our unbelief.

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of faith, help me to sustain it. Forgive me for causing any grief to the Holy Spirit by my unbelief. Help me to believe Your Word above any other source in the world—above what my body tells me, above what the doctors tell me, above what friends or family tell me, above what the internet tells me, above what the news might tell me. Help me to refuse to doubt when doubt is trying so hard to come upon me. Help me to know and fully accept the love You have for me. Dear God, help me to always know Your presence is with me. Lord, I believe and ask that You help me overcome my unbelief. Thank You for Your forgiveness, thank You for Your protection, and thank You for hearing my prayer, in Jesus Name. Amen.

REFLECTION: If left to our own strength and our own faith, we would never make it. Today, when faced with unbelief, acknowledge it, stop and pray, Lord, help my unbelief.
